Sludge Solidification Polymer

SOCO® Solution

Sludge and slurry are common byproducts across industries such as tunneling, drilling, landfills, dredging, and construction. These dense, semi-liquid wastes typically contain water, soil, clay, fine particles, and sometimes chemical additives.

Common sources include:

  • Drilling mud from oil, gas, and infrastructure projects

  • Tunneling and metro construction slurry

  • Landfill leachate and wet waste

  • River and harbor dredging material

  • Dam maintenance and plugging residues

  • Environmental remediation waste

  • Lagoon Sludge & Mud

  • Construction site mud and wastewater

Handling these materials is challenging due to:

  • High Moisture Content: Makes waste heavy, unstable, and costly to transport

  • Leakage Risk: Spills can occur during handling or storage

  • Environmental Concerns: Contaminants require strict regulatory compliance

  • Storage Limitations: Settling ponds and mechanical dewatering need space and time

  • Rising Disposal Costs: Transporting high-water-content waste is inefficient

  • In large-scale tunneling, dredging, or construction projects, these factors can slow operations, increase costs, and raise environmental risks.

Product Introduction

SOCO® sludge and slurry solidification polymer offers a fast, economical, and environmentally responsible way to handle liquid waste. The high-performance polymer works by rapidly absorbing free water in sludge, locking it within a stable gel structure.

Key Advantages

Fast Solidification: Works within minutes, enabling quick site cleanup

Lower Disposal Costs: Reduced waste weight and volume mean fewer trips and smaller landfill fees

Leak-Proof Stability: Gel locks in water and prevents re-release

Space-Saving: Low expansion rate, only 1% keeps waste compact for storage and transport

Improved Safety: Solidified waste is stable, minimizing spill and handling risks

Environmental Compliance: Supports adherence to waste handling regulations

Easy Integration: Can be applied without special equipment, fitting seamlessly into existing workflows

Process:

  • Apply the polymer directly to the sludge or slurry—either at the source, in containers, or at temporary storage points

  • The polymer absorbs water within minutes, transforming liquid or semi-liquid waste into a solid, stable material

  • The gel does not release water even under high pressure, preventing leaks during transport

  • With a volume expansion rate of less than 1%, it minimizes disposal bulk and reduces transportation costs

Dosage Efficiency:

  • Only about 1% polymer by weight of the waste is typically required to achieve solidification

Key Applications

HDD (Horizontal Directional Drilling)

Problem: HDD creates liquid slurry that’s costly and messy to dispose of with traditional methods (vac trucks → bulking with sawdust → more volume → more dump trucks).

SOCO solution: Non-toxic, inert solidification reagents that absorb water fast.

How it helps:

-Solidify on-site

-Load directly into dump trucks to final disposal

-Fewer trucks, lower cost, lower GHG

-Better compliance and control

-Possible reuse as clean fill (subject to local rules)

Tip: Dosage depends on slurry moisture—verify with a quick on-site test.

EPB TBM (Earth Pressure Balance Tunnel Boring Machine)

Problem: EPB TBMs produce wet muck mixed with bentonite/foams; disposal via vac trucks + bulking agents increases volume 50–200%, raising costs and emissions; can also cause high pH and hazardous waste issues.

SOCO solution: Non-toxic, inert reagents to quickly solidify muck.

How it helps:

-Apply at the source (on conveyor) or at the surface

-Start solidifying earlier to save time and labor

-Transport solidified muck directly to disposal

-Fewer trucks, lower cost, lower GHG

Tip: Adjust dosage to muck moisture content.

FAQs

  • What types of waste can SLUSORB solidify?

SLUSORB is effective on a wide range of sludge and slurry, including drilling mud, tunneling and metro construction slurry, landfill leachate, dredged sediment, dam maintenance residues, contaminated soils, and muddy wastewater from construction sites.

  • How long does it take for the sludge to solidify?

The polymer starts absorbing water immediately upon contact and usually completes solidification within a few minutes, depending on waste composition, temperature, and mixing efficiency.

  • Is SLUSORB safe for the environment?

Yes. SLUSORB is non-toxic, non-flammable, and contains no heavy metals. It has been certified by ISO9001, SGS, and BV standards, making it safe for both users and the environment.

  • Can the solidified waste be disposed of in a regular landfill?

In most cases, yes. Once the sludge is solidified and meets local disposal regulations, it can be safely transported and disposed of with regular construction or industrial waste. Always confirm with local environmental authorities before disposal.

  • How does solidification help reduce costs?

Because the volume expansion after absorption is less than 1%, waste weight does not significantly increase. This means lower transportation and landfill tipping fees compared with bulkier reagents like sawdust or cement, making it more cost‑effective.

  • Does solidified waste meet regulatory standards?

Yes. Waste treated with SOCO® polymers passes the EPA Paint Filter Test (9095), ensuring that no free liquid escapes. This compliance simplifies landfill acceptance and reduces environmental risks.
